Unpaid Congressional Internships Snub Low-Income Young People

More than half of all Senate offices and at least three-quarters of House offices do not pay their interns, making it prohibitively expensive for low-income people to intern in Congress, according to a new report from advocacy group Pay Our Interns. Unpaid summer internships in a Congressional office can cost more than $6,000 and make it difficult to hold a second job, favoring wealthy students, according to the report. The organization’s survey of congressional offices finds that Republicans are slightly more likely than Democrats to pay their interns.
