Spotlight Webcast: Women’s Economic Security Campaign, Part 2

Promising Practices

Two-part webcast explores the barriers facing low-income women during the recession and the promising practices that are helping them achieve economic security.

What strategies are likely to be most effective in helping low-income women move out of poverty and achieve long-term economic security? This question is the focus of part two of Spotlight’s webcast with members of the Women’s Economic Security Campaign (WESC). The interview features Surina Khan, vice president of programs for the Women’s Foundation of California, Shante K. Avant, director of grants and programs for the Women’s Foundation for a Greater Memphis, and Shaune Zunzanyika, program officer for the Women’s Funding Network.

The interview highlights local programs that are helping women achieve greater economic security. Among the programs discussed are LIFETIME, a California-based organization that helps women on public assistance obtain college degrees, and Memphis Hope, which links primarily single mothers with the training and supports that lead to steady employment. The guests discuss how women’s foundations can support promising programs.  They also provide insight into specific policy recommendations outlined in WESC’s new report, Aiming Higher: Removing Barriers to Education, Training and Jobs for Low-Income Women (pdf).
